About us


Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao is a leading Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies in Aotearoa with a significant focus on teaching innovation and interdisciplinary research.

Our research and teaching actively promote Māori, Pacific and Indigenous people's languages, cultures and self-determination; through innovative pedagogies and practices.

Its flagship programme is Te Tohu Paetahi.

This one-year Te Reo Māori immersion programme has been delivered for over thirty years and is for students who are committed in their pursuit of learning Te Reo Māori.


About the role
Working in partnership with people, at heart you are self motivated and proactive. You will enhance great working relationships with staff, students and colleagues through affecting manaakitanga.


The Dean will be the strategic and academic leader of the Faculty, responsible for its professional and operational culture and direction.

This also includes the effective stewardship of its resources.

The Dean has specific responsibility to lead academic programme development in the interests of increasing student numbers and advancing the quality of teaching and research in the Faculty.

We are looking for someone who can lead the Faculty and work collaboratively across the University.

You will be required to build and maintain strong relationships with senior leaders including the Ihorangi Māori (Deputy Vice Chancellor Māori), provide pro-active and confident academic leadership, vision and advice.

  • PhD qualified with a record of academic distinction
  • Ability to think strategically and build on flagship programmes (including Te Tohu Paetahi)
  • Well demonstrated connections to hāpori Māori and iwi
  • Indigenous and internationally connected and culturally grounded
  • A recognized mātanga in their field
  • A proven track record in academic or organisational leadership. Experienced in leading inclusive and diverse teams
