This is an interesting role researching and advising on historical and contemporary medallic recognition matters. Your research work will inform medallic policy decisions to acknowledge the service of current and previous NZDF personnel.

The role is primarily a research and policy one focused on making evidence-based recommendations on medals and awards policy for current and former Service personnel.

It is part of the Heritage, Commemorations and Protocol group based in the Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force.
You will be part of a wider team looking at historical and heritage matters related to military service. You will use your research, analytical and writing skills on a daily basis to understand and summarise complex issues.

You will interact with personnel from the three Services, the NZDF's Personnel Archives and Medals, Defence library staff, veterans and staff from other government agencies.

This role is based in Wellington CBD. Flexible working options are negotiable.

You will sometimes be required to work from Trentham Military Camp making use of the rich archival and library resources available there.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

We are seeking a person with proven research skills, a strong knowledge of archival sources and an interest in NZ military history.

Over time you can expect to develop and expand your knowledge of medals and medallic recognition but this is not a pre-requisite.

Your excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as you will interact and build strong relationships with defence personnel, veterans' organisations and other government agencies as well as providing informed and up to date medallic policy advice.


To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Research and analysis skills and experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationshipbuilding skills.
  • Policy development and policy writing skills and experience.
  • Knowledge and preferably experience of legislative and government processes.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand military history would be useful.
  • Knowledge of the history, entitlement and award of military orders, decorations and medals is desirable, but not essential.

The Medals Policy team is part of the Heritage, Commemorations and Protocol Group, Headquarters, New Zealand Defence Force.

We are responsible for the development of policy and provision of expert advice relating to the medallic recognition of operational, special and long service by former and currently serving New Zealand military personnel and other eligible New Zealanders.

- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
