Te āhuatunga a te tūranga/About the roles

The Criminal Justice Unit provides oversight of the criminal justice system through stewardship of key legislation and leadership on critical domestic and international criminal justice issues.

We are looking for a Advisors 2 to join the Unit, which is made up of five teams:

Criminal Law - responsible for work relating to preventing, investigating, and prosecuting crime, offence, and penalty design, and addressing organised crime.

Sentencing and Rehabilitation - responsible for work relating to bail, sentencing, parole, management of offenders in the community, and rehabilitation of offenders
Terrorism and Law Enforcement - responsible for work related to counter terrorism, anti-money laundering, and other law enforcement stewardship (e.g. search and surveillance legislation)

Harm Reduction and Public Safety - responsible for a range of work focused on keeping New Zealanders safe - related to alcohol, drug, and firearms policy, family and sexual violence in the law, and aspects of national security.

Victims - responsible for work to shift to a victim-centric justice system, supporting other policy teams to bring victims' justice needs to the centre of their advice, and coordinating the Ministry's victim-centric initiatives.

The team is also working closely with the Justice Sector Directorate to deliver new ways of working for justice sector agencies with responsibilities to victims.

  • Relationship skills. Do you have strong skills in engaging with diverse internal and external stakeholders, learning from their perspectives as well as influencing them
  • Problem solving skills. Can you think analytically and critically? Do you find complex problems interesting, and have a knack for solving them?
  • Communication skills.
Are you an excellent communicator? Can you write clearly, in a way that simplifies complex information? Do you ask questions to improve your understanding?

  • Advisory skills. Do you have knowledge of machinery of Government and public policy?
Policy advisors (Level 2) in the Policy Group work with others to resolve complex and challenging issues.
The Justice Policy Group actively seeks a diverse applicant pool, with a variety of life experiences. An understanding of Te Āo Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi is particularly valuable.

Utu ā-tau/Salary Range

The appointing salary for a Policy Advisor (Level 2) will be between $83,562 and $116,273, based on skills and experience.
