The Project Management Office at Te Papa is diverse in the projects we deliver - from exhibitions to public programmes, to commercial activity, to our operational requirements, to maintaining our buildings that house our National taonga, and the technology that keeps everything going.

We are seeking someone who can weave the best of PMO practice and management, with a way of working that embraces our creativity and a Te Aō Maori approach into project delivery.

As you can see, we are looking for a special person. You'll have a technical background in project management, that's a given.

What you will do:

The purpose of this position is to lead Te Papa's PMO.

You'll continue to develop a PMO practice that contributes to Te Papa delivering extraordinary experiences, new knowledge and new connections to our audiences, and supports our foundational enabling infrastructure.


Key accountabilities include:

  • Be a great manager of the team supporting a strong team culture and ensuring development and success for you people
  • Be a connector develop effective relationships across Te Papa's leadership to embed the role of the PMO and to ensure the PMO's contribution to Te Papa's success is optimised
  • Be a champion for PMO practice ensuring the toolkit is fit for purpose and reporting and insights flow up and out across leadership and governance levels

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • Demonstrated people management expertise and experience leading and managing a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work across an organisation, understand the different functions and identify and address organisational interdependencies and interconnectivities
  • Welldeveloped ability to critically analyse complex information and make effective recommendations
  • Solid track record of managing projects and at least 5+ years' experience managing a team of project managers within a project management office structure.
  • Knowledge and understanding of effective programme, project and change management strategies, practices and principles
  • Strong awareness of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi and demonstrated ability to embody this commitment in their work
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. MPM, Prince 2, Portfolio and Programme management qualifications)
  • Highly developed skills in persuading, communicating and agreeing complex and challenging outcomes for the business at a senior leadership level
Experience in a relevant role in the museum, arts or creative sectors would be an advantage.
