JJT LIMITED trading as the Backyard Bar and Restaurant in Auckland is looking for a passionate and skilled Chef to join our team. We are a busy gastro pub located in the heart of Auckland, serving high-quality meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity, leadership, and dedication to maintaining our culinary standards.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience as a chef and/or an equivalent culinary qualification (Level 4 or higher).
  • Proven ability to prepare and manage a variety of menu items in a busy restaurant or café environment.
  • Sound knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and allergen management.
  • Ability to lead and supervise kitchen staff while maintaining a calm and professional atmosphere.
  • Strong menu planning and inventory control skills.
  • Excellent time management and communication abilities.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, public holidays, and peak periods.
  • Availability for 30–45 hours per week, depending on business needs.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Chef at Backyard Bar and Restaurant, you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, preparing, cooking, and presenting high-quality meals that align with our menu standards.
  • Supervising and supporting kitchen team members to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Monitoring food quality, portion control, and consistency.
  • Ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and hygiene regulations.
  • Managing stock levels, ordering supplies, and minimizing wastage.
  • Contributing ideas for menu development and seasonal specials.
  • Maintaining cleanliness, organization, and a safe working environment in the kitchen.
  • Working collaboratively with management and front-of-house teams to ensure an excellent dining experience.
