About the role | Mō te tūranga:As Laboratory Manager, you will oversee all operational activities of the Queenstown laboratory, ensuring high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of diagnostic services for our customers and patients. This full-time, permanent role (minimum 80 hours per fortnight) offers the opportunity to lead a dynamic team, optimise lab operations, and make a tangible impact in healthcare. On call weekend work is a requirement of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensuring effective and highest quality services are delivered to our customers while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
  • Leading and supporting the Queenstown laboratory team and working collaboratively with other Awanui South Island Laboratory Managers.
  • Interact with clients to identify opportunities for continuous service excellence, including new services.
  • Working closely with the General Manager and Regional Operations Manager on strategic direction, budgeting, and performance targets.
  • Keeps up to date with new developments, current literature and best practice standards.
  • Ensure staff performance and development reviews are performed in line with company guidelines.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of all staff.
  • Lead and engage with the team to motivate them to deliver the highest customer service.
  • Project management and further development of the laboratory to grow the business and services.
  • Promoting a culture of safety, teamwork, innovation, and professional development.

About you | He kōrero mōuTo be successful in this role you need to have:

  • Hold a tertiary qualification in a clinical, scientific, or health-related field (essential).
  • Be registered and hold a current Annual practicing certificate with the Medical Science Council.
  • At least 5 years' laboratory experience, with management experience within a New Zealand Medical Laboratory.
  • Competence in an appropriate technical laboratory discipline preferred.
  • Financially astute, with the ability to manage budgets and resources effectively.
  • Committed to quality improvement, health and safety, and collaborative leadership.
  • Experience managing quality systems and a sound understanding of Health and Safety regulations.
  • A strategic thinker who thrives in a complex and evolving healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrates creative problem-solving skills to navigate challenges effectively.
  • Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, building trust and connection across clinical and operational teams.
  • Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and manage diverse teams effectively, including across multiple sites.
  • Willingness to work as part of a broader team to establish efficient, patient-centric systems.
  • Demonstrates a desire for formal management or leadership training to further develop skills.
