We're looking for an Adviser to support strategy, planning, and monitoring in the FTA Boost Unit, helping shape the future of New Zealand's trade engagement.

About the role - Kōrero mō te tūranga

The Adviser – FTA Leveraging plays a key role in the newly established FTA Boost Unit within the Trade Policy Engagement and Implementation Division. The Unit is focused on leveraging New Zealand's FTAs and addressing Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) to ensure businesses can fully benefit from our trade agreements.

This role supports the strategy, planning, and monitoring functions of the Unit, including quantitative analysis of FTA utilisation and performance, and providing advice to identify priority areas for government action to leverage our FTAs to resolve barriers facing New Zealand exporters. You'll also help develop long-term plans to better understand and promote FTA opportunities, and support business engagement and capability building across government.

In this role you will:

  • Support whole-of-government policy and strategy on FTA leveraging, including analysis of FTA performance and utilisation
  • Contribute to planning and monitoring functions, including advice to senior officials
  • Provide policy advice on trade issues to improve FTA utilisation
  • Support targeted business engagement and NTB resolution planning
  • Help develop communications and promotional material on FTA utilisation
  • Contribute to capability building across MFAT and other agencies
  • Work collaboratively with other teams to deliver concrete outcomes from FTA leveraging

The appointing salary range for this role is $106,973 to $125,850 total remuneration, inclusive of our 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution. Appointment within this range will depend on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Who are we looking for? - Mā‎ wai te mahi nei?

We're looking for a curious and capable policy professional with:

  • At least 4 years' experience in economic policy or relevant private sector work
  • A background in economics, trade, law, public diplomacy or similar
  • Experience in trade policy or FTA leveraging (preferred)
  • Strong analytical skills, including quantitative analysis
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Project management and strategic thinking capabilities
  • Understanding of government decision-making processes
  • Familiarity with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and tikanga Māori (beneficial)
