Curatorial Internship - Ihupukutaka Kairahuī

Dunedin Public Art Gallery is one of New Zealand's four major metropolitan art galleries. Established in 1884, the Gallery was New Zealand's first Art Gallery and is renowned today for the richness of its historic collection and its close working relationship with major New Zealand artists.

The curatorial internship at Dunedin Public Art Gallery is Aotearoa's most substantial paid training opportunity for emerging curators. If you have a passion for art, exhibition-making, and ideas then we would like to hear from you.

This internship is offered as a fixed term opportunity for up to 10 months, depending on the individual. The successful candidate will be supported in all aspects of working as a curator in a large public institution, working with contemporary art, toi Māori, and historical collections, and with artists based in Aotearoa and internationally. Our work here reflects the Gallery's commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You will join our Exhibition and Collection Team, a supportive, inclusive, and dynamic group who are committed to our work, and to creating opportunities for artists and audiences.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or demonstratable commitment to curatorial practice.
  • Excellent critical writing and communication skills, with experience writing about art.
  • An awareness of te ao Māori and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • A belief in the power of art and artists, and a drive to share this with our diverse audiences.

This is a training role so if your skills and experiences don't meet all aspects of the job description, yet you're excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to apply. If you have questions, please get in touch: subject: curatorial internship
