Asian Family Services (AFS) is seeking up to 2 passionate Health Promoter to deliver suicide prevention and mental wellbeing initiatives for Asian communities in Aotearoa, as part of our "Flourishing Asian Communities" programme. In this impactful role, you'll champion culturally responsive, community-led approaches, working closely with a supportive team and sector partners to make a real difference in public health outcomes for our Asian communities. About the role
As part a dedicated team, you'll be responsible for delivering suicide prevention and mental wellbeing initiatives for Asian communities in Aotearoa, as part of the "Flourishing Asian Communities" programme. The role also contributes to AFS' broader public health promotion activities, including health education, advocacy, and community engagement on issues such as gambling harm and alcohol harm. This position works closely with other health promoters, the wider Public Health team, the service design and enablement team, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure culturally responsive, community-led, and evidence-based approaches.
Key responsibilities - what you'll be doing
Delivering public health initiatives
- Run suicide prevention and mental wellbeing activities directly with Asian communities, following the "Flourishing Asian Communities" workplan.
- Support and help deliver other public health projects, such as those addressing gambling harm.
- Organise and take part in community events, workshops, and health campaigns.
Engaging and supporting the community
- Build relationships and trust with individuals, families, and groups in Asian communities.
- Present information and run workshops in ways that are accessible and culturally relevant.
- Listen to community feedback and use it to shape and improve programmes.
Coordinating and keeping things on track
- Record activities and outcomes accurately to support reporting and evaluation.
- Work closely with colleagues and external partners to ensure programmes run effectively.
- Join regular team meetings and contribute ideas for ongoing improvement.
About You

- Graduate qualification in public health, counselling, social work, or applied mental health sciences (or equivalent experience).
- Knowledge of Asian cultures and cross-cultural understanding, including awareness of stigma-related barriers, with the ability to support and promote early help-seeking behaviours.
- Experience in delivering culturally responsive public health or mental health initiatives, ideally within Asian or multicultural communities.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Strong organisational and time management abilities.
- Understanding of public health principles, especially as it relates to suicide prevention and mental wellbeing in the Asian community context.
- Bi-lingual in English and at least one Asian language.
- A full and clean driver's license.

We are a charitable trust and New Zealand's leading service provider for people of Asian backgrounds affected by mental health issues and gambling harm. Our services are based in the community and span across a variety of settings: telehealth via our Asian Helpline is offered in 7 different languages; harm minimisation and prevention work through our public health team; school-based child and youth mental health and wellbeing programmes via our Kia Ora Ake team; general counselling services through our Asian Wellbeing Services; and gambling harm clinical intervention services.
