Wellington Central, Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand Psychologists Board Full time NZ$90,000 - NZ$120,000 per year
About the Role

The New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB) is seeking a highly experienced registered psychologist to join our team as a Psychology Advisor on a 6-month fixed-term 0.5 FTE basis.

At the NZPB, you'll be stepping into a role where your expertise makes a direct difference to public safety and the future of psychology in Aotearoa. This is an opportunity to bring your deep clinical and professional knowledge into a space where it shapes standards, guides practice, and ensures that the voices of both practitioners and communities are heard.

You'll have the chance to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders — from universities and professional associations to Māori leadership groups and frontline psychologists — and influence how competence, equity, and cultural safety are advanced across the sector.

If you're looking for a role where you can use your skills in a broader systems-level context, and where every decision supports safer and more effective care for New Zealanders, this fixed-term position offers a rare platform to lead, contribute, and make meaningful impact.

As a Psychology Advisor, you will:

  • Provide professional advice on competence, fitness, registration, and conduct matters.

  • Conduct assessments of overseas and complex applications for registration.

  • Support the development and monitoring of competence review processes, programmes, and CCP audits.

  • Contribute to the drafting and updating of best practice standards and guidelines.

  • Provide advice on professional standards, patient safety, and scope of practice applications.

  • Engage with psychologists, stakeholders, universities, professional associations, and other health regulatory bodies.

  • Lead or support training and quality improvement for competence reviewers, supervisors, and assessment teams.

  • Support policy development, project work, and Board communications.

About You

We are looking for an experienced psychologist who brings:

  • Registration in a psychology scope of practice in New Zealand and a full practising certificate (current or held within the last two years).
  • 7+ years post-registration experience in psychology.
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand psychology practice standards, the Code of Ethics, and relevant legislation.
  • Proven ability to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi in professional practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, fair, and legally sound advice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across diverse stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Experience within a regulatory or advisory framework.
  • Experience in leadership, governance, policy, or statutory interpretation.
  • Knowledge or qualifications in tikanga Māori, ethics, or public policy.
Why Join Us?

This is a unique opportunity to use your skills and experience to contribute to the regulation and ongoing development of psychology in Aotearoa New Zealand. You'll be part of a collaborative, committed team working to protect the public and strengthen the profession.
