Tēnei tūranga mahi| About the Team and Role
Te Pou Tawa, the Māori Health Team at Health Hawke's Bay, operates as a collective grounded in the tikanga of a marae. Our mahi is coordinated, intentional, and deeply relational—each team member contributes uniquely, with tuakana teina apporaches to kaupapa, with the purposeful intention to uphold the mana of our rautaki – "Ka Hikitia".
Our team draws strength from the whakataukī:
"Taku manatawa, taku manapou" – The essence and sustenance of my sacred language.
This reflects our commitment to Te Ao Māori, where every action is guided by tikanga, and every interaction is an opportunity to uplift whānau and hapori.
The Te Kura Nui Pouako role holds a pivotal seat within our kaupapa. It is responsible for delivering and developing culturally responsive education for our providers through Health Hawke's Bay Cultural Responsiveness Programme – Te Kura Nui. The Pouako facilitates wānanga, creates tailored learning resources, and fosters meaningful engagement with ākonga and providers. The role champions Māori-led solutions, promotes equity, and strengthens relationships across the health sector, all while upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Te Kura Nui Pouako responsibilities include:
- Facilitating wānanga and hui with a strong tikanga Māori approach
- Designing and delivering tailored learning resources using Māori pedagogies
- Supporting the coordination and administration of the Te Kura Nui programme

- Maintaining accurate records of attendance, progress, and achievement
- Strengthening hapū/iwi partnerships and advocating for Māori-led solutions
- Contributing to programme evaluation and continuous improvement
- Upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all aspects of mahi
