Barker's Foodstore & Eatery - Auckland, is located at Ponsonby Central, overlooking the greenery of Brown Street Reserve.

Our venue is like no other, as we feature our very own Barker's of Geraldine products throughout all our food and beverages, as well as many other delicious ingredients produced in our hometown. Whether it's a traditional South Island cheese roll, a beef brisket pie or a sweet treat, our talented chefs have crafted our much-loved Barker's products into the entire menu.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, weekends 9am to 3pm.

Kitchen Assistant Role – Job Overview and Responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Kitchen Assistant to join our kitchen team. In this hands-on kitchen job, you will play an essential role in maintaining smooth food preparation and kitchen operations, ensuring all food hygiene and safety standards are met.

Main Kitchen Assistant Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Support chefs and kitchen staff with food preparation duties
  • Wash, peel, and chop vegetables and fruits
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen workspaces, utensils, and equipment
  • Assist with dishwashing and sanitizing all kitchenware
  • Ensure proper storage and labeling of food ingredients and supplies
  • Follow all food safety, hygiene, and health & safety guidelines
  • Receive and organize deliveries in the kitchen area
  • Help with basic cooking tasks as directed by chefs or supervisors
  • Dispose of rubbish and recycling in accordance with company guidelines
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to maintain high kitchen standards

Kitchen Assistant Job Requirements and Skills

  • Kitchen experience preferred but not essential – full training provided
  • Ability to work on your feet and carry out manual tasks
  • Strong attention to detail and good time management
  • Good communication skills and willingness to follow instructions
  • Positive, proactive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Flexible to work different shifts, including early mornings, weekends or public holidays as needed
