Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in a growing district that blends urban vibrancy with coastal beauty?  Whangarei District Council is looking for a resourceful Urban Designer to champion urban design in our plans and strategies which will guide the development of our district at a time of major growth.   This is a part time, (0.6) one year fixed term position covering parental leave.

The role

You will work within a dedicated Strategic Planning team who have an exciting and varied work programme. As an integral member of this team you will offer design support by leading and supporting the development of spatial plans and master plans for key urban and rural locations across the district.  This will involve identifying urban design issues and consultation with relevant stakeholders to develop practical solutions.

Combined with this you'll take responsibility for:

  • Developing clear concise plans that deliver high quality design outcomes for the district.
  • Collaborating with the wider organisation to implement plans.
  • Delivering professional advice and research to Council on urban design matters and support a design-led approach to decision making.
  • Generating graphics and presentation material for design related plans and projects.
  • Ensuring that all urban design solutions are the right 'fit' for the district.

What you will bring:

  • Degree level qualification in urban design, landscape design or architecture.
  • Previous experience in an urban design role.
  • Ability to provide high-quality and relevant technical urban design advice.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Effective written, verbal and visual communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate concepts, sketches, plans, perspective renders and similar.
