Wakatipu High School, in conjunction with Graeme Dingle Foundation Southern, are looking for high energy, positive candidates with a passion for helping rangatahi to realise their full potential to run the Stars programme at Wakatipu High School.

  • Permanent, part time - 25 hours per week, term-time only plus 1 week prior to the start of each term (44 weeks per year)
  • Hourly rate between $28.85 (B-C4) and $30.97 (B-C7) depending on experience and qualifications.

Role And Team
The Stars programme strengthens rangatahi during their 12 month transition to high school via the use of peer mentors and a structured series of activities. This important and rewarding role will require the successful candidate to guide, support and develop senior students (peer mentors) as they mentor and support new entrant Year 9 students with their transition to Wakatipu High School.

The ideal candidate will be an effective planner and facilitator with excellent team leadership and relationship management skills, have well developed communication skills, and experience working with rangatahi. Some flexibility in working hours is required.

You will liaise with other organisations in your local community to provide opportunities for additional experiences that allow participants to become more engaged and involved in their surroundings.

Key Responsibilities Of This Role Include

  • Motivating and inspiring groups of rangatahi.
  • Managing and delivering training for year 12 and 13 students to be peer mentors, facilitating peer mentor upskill and session preparation fortnightly, and providing ongoing support.
  • Facilitating the introduction of mentors and mentees and ensuring they develop and maintain a positive relationship.
  • Organising and managing key elements of the programme including Adventure Camp, Community Adventure, Community Project and Graduation, which will require liaising with WHS staff, and local and national community groups and organisations.
  • Engaging with supporters and stakeholders as a Graeme Dingle Foundation representative.
  • Reporting on progress throughout the year, ensuring the quality delivery of the programme and that positive feedback is received from all stakeholders.

About You
This is a role for people with a passion for walking alongside rangatahi at a key stage of their development. Although an understanding of how the education and/or community sector works will be an advantage, more critical to your success will be the following.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Previous experience, knowledge and/or qualification in youth development (e.g. social work, youth work, outdoor/adventure education, or sports);
  • Experience and confidence in facilitating experiential learning with groups;
  • Experience planning and facilitating events and working with schools is desirable.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with rangatahi to develop engagement and trust;
  • Highly organised with strong time management skills, including the ability to support others to grow;
  • Excellent team leadership and relationship management skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Enthusiasm, energy and a growth mindset;
  • Thorough understanding and passion for inclusive learning.
