Position purpose The Machinist supports the Machine Shop Supervisor in the accurate fabrication of aluminium components for Thermosash window and façade systems, using both manual and CNC machining to complete job setup, tooling, precision cutting and finishing, inspection, and process improvement activities.

Role responsibilities Safety – Zero Harm

 Follow all Woods Glass and Thermosash health and safety procedures.

 Wear required PPE and operate machinery safely.

 Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.

 Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Machine Setup and Operation

 Review job sheets, drawings, and tolerances.

 Plan fabrication workflows and select tooling.

 Set up and operate manual and CNC machines.

 Adjust feeds, speeds, and tool offsets.

Precision Work and Quality

 Measure parts accurately.

 Ensure compliance with tolerances and specifications.

 Inspect, deburr, and finish components.

Production Support and Workflow

 Work to production plans.

 Communicate job status and delays.

 Complete job and machine utilisation records.

Continuous Improvement and Collaboration

 Suggest process improvements.

 Assist with adjustments and repairs.

 Support development of SOPs.

General Duties and Maintenance

 Conduct pre-start checks.

 Maintain tidy workspaces.

 Support cross-training.

Qualifications, certifications and experience

Qualifications

 Level 2: 60 credits at Level 2 or higher + 20 credits from any level (Level 1+)

 Trade qualification in aluminium fabrication, sheet metal work, engineering, or related field preferred but not essential.

 Apprenticeship or NZQA Level 3 - 4 qualification in fabrication/joinery/manufacturing is an advantage.

Certifications

 Site Safe Passport (or willingness to obtain).

 Forklift licence and/or EWP (Elevated Work Platform) ticket (advantageous for factory and site work).

 First Aid Certificate (advantageous).

 Thermosash-specific training modules (cutting, bonding, glazing, etc.) - provided on the job.

Experience

 Previous experience in aluminium fabrication, machining, or sheet metal work desirable.

 Experience using fabrication machinery (cutting saws, punches, benders, drills, CNC machines) and hand tools.

 Knowledge of façade or window systems advantageous but not essential.

 Proven ability to read and interpret technical drawings and job sheets.

 Experience working to production schedules, with attention to accuracy and quality.

 Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety.

Technical competencies

 Material handling - knowledge of aluminium, glass, and other façade materials and safe handling techniques.

 Reading drawings & job sheets - ability to interpret technical plans, specifications, and assembly instructions accurately.

 Cutting & fitting - proficiency in measuring, cutting, and shaping components to required dimensions.

 Assembly techniques - skill in assembling frames, units, and components in line with Thermosash procedures.

 Hardware installation - fitting of locks, handles, hinges, and other mechanical fixings correctly.

 Glazing & sealing - safe and accurate installation of glass panels and application of sealants/adhesives.

 Quality control - checking assembled products for accuracy, finish, and compliance with company standards.

 Health & safety awareness - adherence to PPE requirements, safe work practices, and reporting hazards.

 Teamwork & communication - ability to coordinate with colleagues and provide accurate job updates.
