Programme Kaitiaki – Walking alongside former refugees into work
At The Bread Collective, we use the art of bread baking to open doors to employment, community, and confidence for former refugees. We are a not-for-profit programme based in Auckland that supports former refugees into meaningful employment through hands-on bread baking training combined with wraparound pastoral support. Our holistic approach equips participants with the skills needed to succeed in commercial bakeries, as well as supporting wellbeing, confidence, and connection to the community.
Since our founding, we have partnered with organisations such as AUT School of Hospitality & Tourism and leading employers in the baking industry to provide inclusive pathways to work and opportunity. Our graduates leave with both practical skills and the self-assurance to succeed in new work environments. You can learn more about us at
We are now looking for a Programme Kaitiaki to join our team on a 12 month fixed term. This role is about people. You will walk alongside participants from their first day of enrolment through to their first months in paid employment. You will be the steady point of connection as they gain skills, grow in confidence, and step into new opportunities.
In this role, you will:
- Recruit and enrol participants, including home visits and whānau engagement
- Build strong, trusting relationships with participants, employers, and community partners
- Support participants with CVs, cover letters, and interview preparation
- Accompany participants to interviews and follow up during their first 3 months of work
- Help employers understand cultural needs and support job placements
- Work alongside the team during orientation, baking classes, and graduation events
About you
- Empathetic, patient, and culturally aware
- Confident communicator with strong English writing and speaking skills
- Experienced in working with diverse communities, ideally former refugees or migrants.
- Organised, proactive, and solutions-focused
- Physically fit to help in the bakery as needed (standing, bending, lifting flour or trays of bread)
- Full or restricted driver license and your own vehicle
*Experience supporting people into employment, including navigating government services and subsidies, would be an advantage for this role. However, if you have the right attitude and determination, we can support you to build these skills.
The details
- 0.8 FTE, Tuesday to Friday
- Regular programme hours run late afternoons into the evenings, but there will be flexibility in terms start and finish times between programmes
- During the induction period you will also need to be available for some evening and weekend sessions
- Fixed term, 12 months, starting January 2026
- Auckland based
This is a rare opportunity to join a values-driven programme where your empathy and drive will create lasting impact in people's lives.
Apply now with your CV and cover letter telling us a bit about you and why you are right for this role
