Financial Accountant

Wellington Central, Wellington, New Zealand Ashburton District Council Full time NZ$60,000 - NZ$100,000 per year

WANTED: Financial Accountant with Superpowers (or just really good Excel skills)

Location: Somewhere between spreadsheets and civic duty

Are you a wizard with numbers? Do you dream in balance sheets? Can you make a budget sing while sipping your morning coffee? Then we want YOU to join our local government team.

What's in it for you?

  • A desk with your name on it (and probably a few sticky notes).
  • Endless opportunities to say, "That's not in the budget."
  • The thrill of reconciling accounts that haven't been reconciled since 1997.
  • Free coffee, occasional biscuits, and the admiration of people who still think Excel is magic.

Your mission (should you choose to accept it):

  • Tame wild spreadsheets.
  • Translate financial jargon into human language.
  • Keep us on the financial straight and narrow (no pressure).
  • Occasionally nod wisely in meetings.

You'll fit right in if you:

  • Know your way around a ledger like a GPS.
  • Can spot a missing cent from 100 metres away.
  • Enjoy the smell of freshly printed financial reports.
  • Laugh in the face of audit season.

Ready to apply?

Because behind every great community is a financial accountant who made sure we could afford it.

This position is based in Ashburton, Mid-Canterbury.

Applications close 3 January 2026, for a copy of the position description click here.

We will be reviewing applications as they are received. Should we identify a suitable candidate early in the process, we reserve the right to close applications ahead of the advertised closing date. For a confidential chat about the role please phone Erin Register, Finance Manager on

If this sounds like your ideal role, then we'd love to hear from you
