Finance Business Partner – Water NZ

Location: Auckland, NZ 
Division: Energy & Utilities – Water NZ

The opportunity

Downer's Energy & Utilities business is seeking a Finance Business Partner to join our Water NZ team. Reporting to the Head of Finance – Water NZ, you'll work closely with project and operational leaders to provide trusted financial insights that shape decision-making and drive project success.

This role is central to supporting major infrastructure projects, ensuring strong financial management, compliance, and commercial outcomes. You'll be joining a collaborative finance team with exposure to high-profile water projects that make a real impact in communities across New Zealand.

What you'll do

  • Partner with operational teams to deliver financial insights that support strategic and project outcomes.
  • Lead project accounting activities including forecasting, budgeting, valuations, and WIP management.
  • Develop accurate cashflow forecasts, manage receivables, and optimise cash inflows.
  • Provide financial support on bids and tenders, ensuring commercial rigour and compliance.
  • Deliver timely, accurate reporting and ensure audit and regulatory requirements are met.

What we're looking for

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Commerce, or related discipline.
  • CPA or CA (or equivalent professional membership).
  • 7+ years' experience in financial/project accounting, ideally in construction or infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical skills with advanced Excel and exposure to ERP/project systems (JDE, SAP, InEight, Jobpac, MS Dynamics).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to partner effectively across all levels of the business.
