Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dunedin Hospital
Salary: Base salary from ASMS MECA 2024 (NZD 185, ,980)
Fixed Term 1.0 FTE (November May 2026)
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.
We are seeking a fixed term general ophthalmologist from November May 2026.
About the role
The Dunedin Public Hospital Eye Department provides ophthalmology services to all of Otago and Southland so we require a dynamic, hardworking individual with excellent time management skills to become an integral part of our close-knit team. Our links with the University of Otago and affiliation with the Otago Medical School means that you are an honorary lecturer to Medical Students and there is a chance to be involved in research. We also provide training to registrars from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and enjoy helping them on their journey towards becoming a future ophthalmologist and often host the 'Part 2' course prep in the department.
We are seeking an Ophthalmologist that knows the New Zealand health system intricately and the constraints we face within ophthalmology – so we welcome applications from a forward thinking, innovative ophthalmologist that loves challenges and working in a busy department. This role is primarily based in Dunedin but some travel across the Southern District is expected. You will be expected to participate in the 1:6 on call roster, routine ophthalmology clinics, theatre and some outreach clinics.
About you
- Able to start from November 2025 and cover until May 2026.
- Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Enthusiastic about teaching and passing your knowledge to junior members of staff
- Excellent communication and time management skills
