What you can expect as a PGF in Orthopaedic Surgery at Maitland Public Hospital:

 - Advanced clinical training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of hip and knee pathologies, with a focus on both surgical and non-surgical interventions.

 - In-depth exposure to a wide range of complex cases, including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, joint preservation procedures, as well as advanced management techniques for trauma, sports injuries, and degenerative conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Clinical Management: Participate in the diagnosis, assessment, and management of hip and knee patients, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.

• Surgical Exposure: Assist in and perform a variety of hip and knee procedures, including primary and revision joint replacements, arthroscopic surgeries, fracture management, and soft tissue repair.

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work in a multidisciplinary team environment, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, and nursing staff, to provide comprehensive patient care.

• Patient Education: Counsel patients on surgical and non-surgical options, including the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of various treatment modalities.

• Research and Quality Improvement: Engage in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives related to hip and knee surgery. Fellows will have the opportunity to publish findings and contribute to ongoing projects in collaboration with senior staff.

• Teaching and Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals involved in the hip and knee service.

Clinical Areas of Focus:

- Primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty

- Hip and knee arthroscopy

- Complex fracture management

- Joint preservation techniques

- Management of degenerative joint diseases

- Sports medicine and rehabilitation

- Multidisciplinary care for elderly and frail patients with hip and knee conditions

Requirements:

- Experience: Completion of orthopaedic training and be proficient in fundamental surgical skills.

- Interest in Specialisation: A demonstrated interest in hip and knee surgery with an eagerness to pursue further specialisation in the field.

- Professionalism: High standards of clinical care, patient communication, and collaboration within a team environment.

- Research Aptitude: Interest in clinical or translational research related to hip and knee arthroplasty is highly encouraged.

- Medical Qualifications: A primary specialist medical degree registered with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)and/or eligible for specialist registration as a Specialist Orthopaedic Surgery and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.

International medical graduates who are overseas trained specialists must be assessed by the relevant Australian Specialist Medical College and, as a result, gain limited registration with AHPRA on a specialist pathway satisfactory to the college, AHPRA and the Local Heath District prior to commencement.

Consideration will be given to overseas doctors who meet the Limited Pathway for Short Term Training in a Medical Specialty Pathway and would be placed on the Medical Officers Award
