Junior Artificial Intelligence Engineer

We are seeking a Junior Artificial Intelligence Engineer to join our team at Xtracta, a leading innovator in AI-driven document extraction technology based in Auckland, New Zealand. It is a full time ( more than 30 hours per week) and permanent role based in Penrose, Auckland.
The position is for a junior artificial intelligence engineer to both assist with/carry out research processes related to the products and services of the company and prepare/assist with the preparation of software to utilize relevant outputs of the research for various uses. The research processes will include aspects such as scoping of objectives, preparation of training data, review of relevant research (and other materials that could indicate avenues for inquest and research for the objective at hand) and the actual processes to prepare, test and report on the outcome of such research. The software engineering processes will include all requirements in support of the research (such as preparing programs to test hypothesis, collate data etc.) as well as software engineering work that may be needed to allow the usage of any outcomes of the research that will be used for other purposes (for example production usage within the company's products & services).
Responsibilities
The role requires a junior artificial intelligence engineer who can work in a team environment to research, develop, enhance and document business critical software applications & artificial intelligence technology based on provided specifications, guidance and the engineer's own skills to understand and improve systems. The position will start by joining a small team to continue developing existing artificial intelligence systems and/or new applications. The role requires the junior artificial intelligence engineer to:
- Learn the current source code in a reasonable time, adapt to the coding style to debug and troubleshoot issues.
- Have a sound understanding of the business, its products, how its customers use the products and why they use them.
- Interpret & comprehend business requirements and propose designs suitable for the business including potential future growth and planned/foreseeable feature requirements.
- Write readable code using established coding guidelines and easy to understand comments.
- Ensure software development, feature pre-planning and security standards are met.
- Ensure customer information security rule/regulation and the operating environment platform are met.
- Ensure that all code is thoroughly tested and handed over for user acceptance testing that results in correctly working, bugfree code
- This includes implementing effective mechanisms for testing and evaluation
- Good quality program design that predicts and overcomes or resolves issues likely to be encountered in the commercial operation and use of the software that is developed by the engineer.
- Thinking and planning ahead of possibly perceived changes to the systems the engineer is working on
- Writing clear and concise documentation as necessary
- Maintain currency in knowledge of the contemporary state of machine learning and artificial intelligence research and popular industry-based approaches, technologies and platforms used for the implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence in an industry setting. This includes reading academic papers, undertaking courses and consuming other relevant material as is necessary
Minimum requirement: Bachelor in IT or 3-year relevant experience.
Required Skills:
- Good problem-solving skills and systematic approach to tackle complex problems
- Good working knowledge of programming including utilising the Python programming language - includes the usage of industry standard design patterns
- Knowledge of all core machine learning concepts (including transformer models) as is typically taught in contemporary machine learning courses and ability for the practical application of these within software systems
- Experience with object orientated programming
- Experience with typical desktop computing and data analysis tools
- Ability to quickly comprehend situations or scenarios and find solutions to raised issues using knowledge of the current (or planned future) environment.
- Good English communication skills including both oral, face to face and written communications suitable for a professional business setting.
