Pae Tukutuku Purapura Whetū | Māori Land Court, Te Waipounamu (Christchurch)

Te āhuatunga a Te Kooti Whenua Māori/About the Māori Land Court

We are a court of record. Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (our Act) recognises the significance of Māori land as a taonga tuku iho of special significance to the Māori people. Our role is to provide a court service for owners of Māori land, their whānau and their hapū which promotes the retention and use of Māori land; and facilitates the occupation, development, and use of that land.

The record held by Te Kooti Whenua Māori is taonga tuku iho and the Court is the guardian of the whakapapa of the land, which is the people.

Te Haeata/The Opportunity

We currently have a  fixed term vacancy until March 2025 covering parental leave in our Te Waipounamu Māori Land Court registry office in Christchurch. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands-on experience in government operations, Māori land law, and archival recordkeeping.

The Pae Tukutuku Purapura Whetū role is responsible for the implementation of national systems and processes to ensure all Māori Land Court physical records are managed, stored and accessed with integrity, in order to meet its obligations under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and the Public Records Act 2005. This role also:

  • Identifies ongoing Records Preservation training needs;
  • Provides Records Management advice including records handling practices;
  • Ensures the accuracy and detail of the Court record is maintained in accordance with documentation procedures and required standards; and
  • Maintains a current register of all Māori Land Court district office records held in other repositories ie, Archives NZ and advises customers about how to access these records.

A key function of the role is the implementation and management of processes to enable Māori Land Court customers to access information contained in our record eg, whakapapa information, iwi and hapū boundaries, rights of ahi kā, location of wāhi tapu etc, while ensuring that the security and quality of the records are maintained.

If this sounds like you then we are interested in hearing from you
