About the Role
As a Senior HMC Engineer (Linux and Unix) you will provide technical leadership and expert guidance across Health NZ's Hybrid Multi-Cloud (HMC) environment, ensuring our digital infrastructure is secure, efficient, and future-ready. The role is focused on the Linux and Unix systems across Health NZ\Te Whatu Ora. You will lead the delivery of high-quality technical solutions, identify opportunities for optimisation, and drive initiatives that strengthen performance and reliability. Working closely with cloud engineers, technical leads, vendors, and the wider digital operations team, you will play a key role in shaping and implementing best practices that align with Health NZ's national digital strategy. Alongside your technical delivery work, you will mentor and support other engineers, contributing to a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. In addition, we are also looking for people to join our Digital Services on-call pool. This involves being part of a roster that provides after-hours support as required.

About you
You are an experienced and forward-thinking ICT professional with a passion for leading technical excellence in complex digital environments. You combine deep technical Linux and Unix expertise with strong leadership and mentoring skills, ensuring services are secure, reliable, and built for the future. With a proven ability to optimise performance, guide teams, and deliver scalable solutions, you're driven by the challenge of shaping world-class cloud and hybrid infrastructure that supports better health outcomes across Aotearoa.
You will bring experience with Linux and/or Unix systems in the following areas:
- Proven experience providing technical leadership and expert oversight across large-scale or complex IT environments
- 7+ years in technical support roles focused on ensuring service availability, stability, and compliance with standards
- 3+ years leading optimisation and improvement initiatives, driving best practice and innovation across infrastructure and cloud platforms
- Experience with technical planning, implementation, and mentoring other engineers to build capability across teams
- Demonstrated success delivering high-quality technical solutions that align with business and digital strategy goals
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (required), or at least 10 years of relevant experience and/or postgraduate certification
- Service Management or ITIL certifications (desirable)
- Proficiency and experience in managing Linux systems of various flavours, in particular Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Ability to write scripts in bash and python
- Hands-on experience with monitoring tools
- Understanding of Operating System and network security
- Hands-on experience with Performance Analysis and Tuning
- Understanding of TCP/IP networking, host firewalls and filesystems
- Experience with Ansible Automation Platform and Satellite
- Ability to write and understand Ansible playbooks and roles
- Experience with Azure or AWS
- Experience with Agile methodologies, including Sprints and Kanban
