Hastings, Iowa, New Zealand Machina Supply co ltd Full time NZ$60,000 - NZ$80,000 per year

Machina Peritia crafts some of the world's most innovative aluminium vessels—where performance engineering meets considered aesthetics. As demand for our foiling catamarans and premium trailer boats grows, we're expanding our Hawke's Bay production team and are looking for a skilled Aluminium Boat Builder who shares our obsession with precision and finish.

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Marine Painter to join our yard, focusing on prepping, fairing, and painting across high-end new builds and refits. You'll work on a variety of vessels (from performance yachts to commercial craft), delivering premium finishes that meet strict marine and superyacht standards.

What You'll Do
  • Surface preparation: degreasing, sanding (DA & longboard), grinding, feathering, and filling.
  • Fairing: mix, apply, and longboard fairing compounds to tight tolerances; check fairness with battens/guide coats.
  • Coatings application: primers, high-builds, epoxies, and urethane topcoats (e.g., Awlgrip/Imron/Axalta) via spray, roll-and-tip, and brush as required.
  • Detail work: masking, taping, cutting lines, nib-outs, blending, colour matching, and finishing to a yacht-grade gloss.
  • Process control: measure film build, mix ratios, pot life; record batch numbers; maintain booth and equipment.
  • Varied work: You'll cross-train and pitch in across other divisions as needed—think CNC router operation, fabrication, sheet-metal bending, carpeting, and more.
  • Quality & safety: uphold QA standards; maintain clean work areas; use PPE; follow confined space/working-at-heights procedures.
What You'll Bring
  • 2–5+ years marine or high-end automotive/aviation painting and fairing experience (yacht experience highly valued).
  • Strong knowledge of epoxy systems, high-build primers, and polyurethane topcoats.
  • Skilled with HVLP/compliant spray guns, longboarding techniques, and surface diagnostics (orange peel, pinholes, print-through).
  • Ability to read job cards/spec sheets and work to tight tolerances and deadlines.
  • Physically capable of repetitive sanding/fairing, working on scaffolds and in confined spaces.
  • A great teammate with high attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
