About the position
We are seeking a talented Tsunami Modelling Scientist to join our team. As a Tsunami Modelling Scientist, you will develop and run hydrodynamic models of tsunami. You will then use these models to conduct commercial and underpinning research to help make New Zealand and the region safer from tsunami.
The position would best suit a recent PhD graduate, preferably with a post-graduate qualification in tsunami hydrodynamic modelling or in a closely related field.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting fundamental and applied research into tsunamis and their causes.
- Developing tsunami hydrodynamic models and using them to conduct tsunami hazard and risk assessments.
- Assisting with the provision scientific advice during a tsunami event response that may threaten New Zealand.
- Developing research plans and proposals in consultation with senior staff.
- Publishing papers, contributing to commercial and science reports, presenting at scientific conferences and contributing to outreach activities as needed.
About you
The ideal candidate will have:
- A relevant post-graduate qualification, preferably a PhD in tsunami hydrodynamic modelling or in a closely related field.
- A demonstrated track record of publishing research papers in leading scientific journals and/or completing applied research reports.
- Experience with programming in Fortran, C or other commonly used programming or scripting languages.
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of tsunami physics, tsunami hydrodynamic numerical modelling methods, tsunami warning systems and/or natural hazard or risk assessment methods.
- Knowledge of good software engineering design principles for scientific software design, development, testing, maintenance and documentation.

- The salary range for this position is between $87,975 to $97,750 or more, depending on the successful candidate's experience.
