Assistant Superintendent – Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club

Reporting to the Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the effective supervision and execution of all golf course maintenance and presentation activities at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club.

This includes the planning, coordination, and implementation of turf management practices, irrigation operations, machinery maintenance, and course improvement works.

The role requires a high standard of professionalism, leadership, and technical expertise to ensure the course is maintained in optimal playing condition and presented to the highest possible standard at all times.


General Tasks
  • Operate and maintain a range of mowing and powered equipment to prepare and present greens, surrounds, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, to the required standard.
  • Utilise appropriate hand tools for tasks including hole changing, turf establishment, bunker and plantation maintenance, construction works, and hand watering as required.
  • Ensure all course machinery is maintained in safe and efficient working order, including:

  • Adjusting and sharpening cutting units

  • Greasing and lubrication
  • Carrying out minor repairs and maintenance where appropriate
  • Identifying and recommending future maintenance requirements
  • Perform all duties in full compliance with Health & Safety guidelines, environmental standards, and Club policies.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, motivation, and guidance to course maintenance staff, ensuring all work is completed to the standards agreed with the Course Superintendent.
  • Supervise daily operations and allocate tasks effectively to achieve high-quality course presentation and efficient use of resources.
  • Support the Course Superintendent in staff management matters, including performance feedback and disciplinary processes, in accordance with Club policies.
  • Assist in the education, training, and development of new and apprentice staff, including the demonstration of correct maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Apply fertilisers and pesticides in consultation with the Course Superintendent, ensuring all chemical storage areas, equipment, and application records are maintained in a safe, compliant, and organised manner.
  • Monitor course conditions, including turf health, irrigation performance, and signs of pest or disease, and report findings promptly to the Course Superintendent.
  • Recommend maintenance priorities and future improvement projects to enhance course quality and playability.
  • Operate, schedule, and maintain the irrigation system to ensure efficient and effective water management across the course.

Employment Standards
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the Course Superintendent, staff, Club members, and contractors, maintaining a high standard of professionalism at all times.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and proficiency in, the use of tools, machinery, and equipment associated with golf course maintenance and construction.
  • Proven ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Sound understanding of Health & Safety regulations, as well as the Club's operational policies and procedures.
  • Sufficient physical fitness, stamina, and mobility to perform all duties required of the position.
  • Knowledge of turfgrass pests, diseases, and disorders, including the ability to calibrate and safely operate pesticide application equipment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and during tournaments or other peak periods, as required.
  • Possession of a current Approved Handler's Certificate (or equivalent qualification).
  • Commitment to maintaining a high standard of course presentation, including periodic play of the course to assess its condition and playability.
