About us:

Writer's Toolbox is a multi-award-winning Education Technology company, delivering writing improvement programmes using SaaS delivery to hundreds of schools globally and proven to achieve more than double national writing outcomes. With teams across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, Toolbox has an established programme that is gaining international reputation for its ability to deliver education transformation at scale using cutting-edge AI.

About the role:

We're on an exciting growth journey and as part of this evolution we're looking for a talented Data Engineer to join us and make a significant impact.

You will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining our company's data infrastructure, empowering the business to make data-driven decisions. Reporting directly to our Chief Technology Officer, you will be responsible for creating robust data pipelines, developing scalable data models, and ensuring seamless data access and application for all users.

This is a fantastic career opportunity to develop your skills and gain hands-on experience within a scaling international company.

Key responsibilities:

  • Data Strategy & Architecture: Design and implement scalable and efficient data warehouse and data lake models (including Kimball and Data Vault). Evaluate and select optimal data tools and technologies, staying abreast of emerging trends.
  • Data Pipeline & Systems Management: Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT pipelines with a deep understanding of best practices. Manage AWS data systems with a focus on cost optimization. Work with container-based workloads and Kubernetes for system deployment and management, and implement GitOps principles and tools like dbt for version control and data transformation.
  • User Enablement & Collaboration: Collaborate with non-technical users to translate business needs into user-friendly, performant data models. Empower all business members to effectively utilize published datasets and establish clear standards for data applications, reporting, and dashboards to ensure organizational consistency.
  • Agile Environment: Propose, plan, and document work within an agile framework, ensuring proper capture and tracking in relevant systems.

What you'll bring:

This intermediate-level role requires 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar capacity. Additionally, you will need:

  • Data Modelling: Experience designing and implementing data warehouse/Kimball data models. Experience with Data Vault modelling is also a plus.
  • ETL/ELT Pipelines: Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines, coupled with a good understanding of potential pitfalls and best practices.
  • Technical Stack: Experience with one or more ETL tools and databases. We use DBT and DuckDB.
  • Cloud Computing: Experience building and managing data systems in any cloud, but with an eye for cost management. We use AWS.
  • Orchestration: Comfort with container-based workloads. We currently run our ELT jobs as containers on Kubernetes.
  • Agile: Experience working in an agile environment and the ability to self-direct planning and documentation.
  • Communication: An empathetic approach when interacting with non-technical users, coupled with the ability to build data models that are not only performant, but easy to use and understand.

What we offer:

  • Flexible working arrangements, including the option to work-from-home, up to two days per week.
  • Purpose-driven work within a growing EdTech company.
  • Genuine opportunities for career growth within a scaling international organisation.
  • A friendly office environment featuring complimentary fruit, regular team lunches, and ample free street parking.

To apply:

Please submit your CV and a cover letter detailing why you are the ideal candidate for this role. We look forward to hearing from you
