About us
Waimana Marine Ltd is a family-owned business with over four decades in the Greenshell Mussel industry. This multi-faceted operation provides mussel farm servicing, contract harvesting and spat production. Each operation shares the commitment to sustainable marine farming practices dedicated to protecting our resources for now and for the future generations to come.
We are seeking a Skipper and a First Mate to take the helm of our recently launched purpose-built mussel barge "Tai Ata" based at Port Tarakohe and fishing in the pristine waters of Golden Bay.
About the Role
The Skipper and First Mate responsibilities are relatively the same, with the First Mate playing a key operational role supporting the Skipper and able to step into the Skipper role as and when required. Both roles report to the Operations Manager and responsibilities include:
- Leading the day-to-day vessel operations with a focus on safety, efficiency and teamwork
- Mentoring and management of the crew
- Ensuring compliance with Maritime NZ, WorkSafe and MOSS standards
- Maintaining vessel and equipment to survey standards
- Conducting safety drills, lead meetings and training
- Contributing to strategic improvements
Our four day on four day off rotation provides full time work all year round and supports the all-important work life balance.
About you
Our ideal candidate/s:
- Has leadership experience with proven ability to lead and inspire a crew
- Is a licensed skipper with CLM, IML or SRL ticket + 24m endorsement
- Technically skilled with knowledge of Greenshell Mussel farming, vessel maintenance and safety systems
- Has basic computer literacy
- Is team orientated and can foster a positive crew culture and an effective communicator
- Is committed to the vision of the company
- Additionally, Hiab, Forklift and HT licence would be an advantage
- With DTE or MEC6 engineering ticket would also be an advantage
We take our commitment to health and safety seriously and all employees must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and Waimana Marine operates a random drug and alcohol testing program.
This role requires you to have the right to work in New Zealand and have a full driver's license.
