Firmware Engineer
Frogparking is a global parking technology company based in Palmerston North.
We design, build, and operate the full stack of modern parking systems: from in-ground sensors, wireless guidance, and kiosks, through to cloud services, mobile apps, and analytics used by customers around the world.
We're looking for a Firmware Engineer who loves working close to the hardware, shipping reliable code to real devices, and helping bring new parking technology products to life.
What you'll be working on
You'll contribute across the full firmware lifecycle, including:
- Firmware design and bring-up for new hardware products, working closely with our in-house hardware team
- Maintenance and enhancement of existing firmware, continuously improving performance and reliability
Supporting production, including:
building and maintaining test jigs
- writing PC tools and software for automated testing and device configuration
- Monitoring device performance in the field, analysing logs and behaviour to identify improvements
- Managing the firmware deployment process, ensuring safe and controlled OTA updates across global installations
- Developing firmware for a range of hardware including parking sensors, access-control devices, IoT endpoints, and onsite gateways
- Implementing communication with peripherals (RFID, sensors, cellular modems, Bluetooth, etc.)
- Collaborating with software and hardware teams using GitHub for version control, code reviews, and CI workflows
What we're looking for
Must Have
- Strong experience in embedded C for microcontrollers
- Ability to read hardware schematics and work confidently with low-level protocols (UART, SPI, I²C, etc.)
- Practical experience debugging firmware in both lab and field environments
- Experience using Git/GitHub in a team-based environment
- Good understanding of embedded system constraints (timing, memory, power)
- Knowledge of RTOS (FreeRTOS or similar)
- Experience with cellular modems and AT command stacks (Cat-M1, NB-IoT, LTE)
- Experience with Raspberry Pi as a test rig or integration platform
- Experience writing simple desktop utilities for test, debug, or production support (C#, Python, etc.)
- Experience with wireless modules (RFID, Bluetooth, GNSS) or IoT architectures
Why you'll enjoy it here
- Your firmware will run in airports, cities, universities, hospitals, and large parking structures worldwide
- Work on end-to-end product development, not just one component
- Hands-on environment with lab gear, test rigs, prototypes, and hardware tools
- Palmerston North HQ – great lifestyle without the big-city commute
- Competitive salary based on your experience and impact
