Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio is seeking a dedicated and capable Kaitiaki Pounamu to lead the protection, monitoring, and sustainable management of pounamu and aotea in accordance with the Ngāi Tahu (Pounamu Vesting) Act 1997 and the Makaawhio Pounamu Management Plan. This role safeguards the cultural, environmental, and commercial integrity of these taonga while fostering education, compliance, and collaboration with whānau, Papatipu Rūnanga, and external agencies.
He kōrero mōu / About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Strong understanding of Poutini Ngāi Tahu tikanga and kawa relating to taonga such as pounamu and aotea.
- Have an understanding of Ngāti Māhaki values.
- Established working relationships within the rohe and knowledge of the local geography.
- Experience in environmental monitoring, compliance, or resource management (desirable).
- Experience in relationship management and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and organisational abilities.
- Confidence in monitoring, compliance, and enforcement contexts.
- A commitment to protecting and upholding the mana of pounamu.
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience.
Ngā Kawenga Takohanga / Key Accountabilities
- Protection & Monitoring: Implement management plans, monitor permits, and respond to reports of illegal activity.
- Data & Reporting: Maintain databases, prepare reports, and issue updates to sellers.
- Education & Engagement: Raise awareness, support research, and lead wānanga and hīkoi.
- Operational Support: Coordinate logistics, manage costs, and support planning.
- Health & Safety: Promote safe practices and ensure compliance.
- Cultural Competency: Participate in cultural activities and support others in te ao Māori.
