Chief Executive

Invercargill Central, New Zealand HR South Full time

For almost 150 years The Y has been helping build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

We're now looking for a dynamic and values-driven Chief Executive to be part of the story, leading The Y into its next stage of growth and community impact as we further our mission of igniting potential and empowering greatness in every person that comes through our doors.

About the role

Reporting to the Board, our Chief Executive provides overall leadership and direction to The Y in a hands-on role that balances strategic direction with operational oversight. You will lead a small, passionate team as you work to ensure our services remain responsive and aligned with the changing needs of our community.

Key priorities of the role include:

  • Leading the implementation of the organisation's strategic plan, in alignment with the national vision and values
  • Working collaboratively with other leaders across The YNZ network to ensure the successful delivery of our national priorities
  • Driving growth across the key area of youth education, and promoting positive youth development and education outcomes
  • Establishing and developing relationships with local funders, government agencies, community partners, and The Y nationally
  • Supporting and empowering our staff and volunteers in the work they do
  • Driving financial sustainability, operational excellence, and innovative service delivery
  • Working collaboratively with the Board to deliver on strategic goals, and support sound governance and effective risk management

About you

Our Chief Executive will be an experienced senior leader or CE who is both strategic and hands-on - someone who can see the big picture but isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and support their team on the ground. In addition to possessing a strong level of commercial acumen you will ideally have some experience in a not-for-profit, community or social service setting, as well as the ability to work effectively with a Board.

The successful candidate will also:

  • Be values driven and take a people-centred approach to leadership, with proven experience developing motivated, engaged and high-performing teams
  • Network effectively, with the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders throughout the local community as well as nationally
  • Have a strong understanding of budgeting, funding and general compliance
  • Be passionate about youth, community development, and creating positive change

A tertiary qualification in business management, leadership, or a related discipline is preferred but not essential.

Why join The Y?

This is your chance to lead an organisation that makes a real difference in the lives of those in our communities. You'll join a supportive, purpose-drive team and an engaged Board, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing your work is contributing to a stronger region.

How to apply

If you're a leader who thrives on community connection and shares our values – caring, honesty, respect, responsibility - we would love to hear from you.

Contact or for more information or apply online now.

Applications close Monday 17 November 2025.
