We're looking for a Chief Advisor to the Deputy Chief Executive - Aviation Security - a strategic partner and trusted leader who can help steer the future of aviation security in New Zealand.

This role is based in Wellington.

About the Role

You'll play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and performance of the Aviation Security Group. As the DCE's trusted advisor, you'll provide high-level analysis, insight and advice on complex issues, ensuring that leadership decisions are well-informed and aligned with the organisation's priorities.

You'll act as a key liaison across the Civil Aviation Authority and with external partners - representing the DCE in strategic forums, leading cross-agency initiatives, and supporting the effective delivery of aviation security outcomes that protect New Zealand's skies.

This is a diverse and influential role that requires political acumen, discretion, and the ability to operate confidently across organisational boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert, strategic advice to the DCE and Aviation Security Leadership Team.
  • Lead or support projects, reviews, and change programmes across the Group.
  • Represent the DCE in meetings, working groups, and cross-agency forums.
  • Maintain oversight of key initiatives, identifying and mitigating risks.
  • Develop high-quality briefings, communications, and governance material.
  • Build strong relationships across CAA and with external stakeholders.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing culture across the Group's leadership team.

About You

This is a role for someone who thrives on influence- a trusted thinker, communicator, and relationship builder who can connect dots across a complex system.

You'll bring a blend of strategic thinking, political awareness, and operational understanding. You're comfortable navigating ambiguity and influencing at senior levels with confidence and credibility.

To succeed in this role, you'll have:

  • Proven experience delivering strategic, high-level advice within government or a regulatory environment.
  • Strong understanding of public sector processes, governance, and regulatory practice.
  • Exceptional communication, analysis, and relationship management skills.
  • The ability to manage complex and sensitive issues with sound judgement and discretion.
  • Experience leading or supporting major strategic or organisational initiatives.
  • A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to integrity, inclusion, and public service.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
