Auckland District Court

Permanent, Full Time Position

Te Haeata/The Opportunity

We are looking for a Legal and Research Advisor to join our team providing legal and research support to the tribunals administered by the Ministry of Justice. This is a role where your passion for the law, legal method and research skills will directly contribute to the judicial process.

This role is primarily to support the Immigration and Protection Tribunal in its jurisdiction determining residence appeals, deportations, and refugee and protected person claims. At times, you may be asked to assist other tribunals, including but not limited to the Human Rights Review Tribunal, the Disputes Tribunal, and the Tenancy Tribunal.

The requirements of the position are fully set out in the position description, and your day-to-day role will involve providing legal research services (in particular in the NZ jurisdiction, but also foreign legal research) and litigation/judicial support services (including a significant amount of legal proofreading and abstracting work) to the judicial officers.

Your wider responsibilities will involve staying up-to-date on developments in the law and completing longer-term legal research projects. You will have opportunities to research novel legal issues, as well as to learn from the judicial officers about the work that they do and the way they make decisions.

Your work in this role will help deliver justice services to the public and gives you an opportunity to build strong relationships across the Ministry of Justice.

Ō pūkenga/Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • a Bachelor of Laws degree or higher, with demonstrated relevant legal research capabilities
  • excellent organisation, communication, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • an interest in learning about the issues our tribunals adjudicate on, and in developing your legal career
  • a thorough understanding of judicial independence and the constitutional arrangements between the executive branch and the judiciary
  • meticulous spelling, grammar and attention to detail
  • prior legal experience with some of the relevant statutes or litigation generally would be advantageous
  • 1-2 years experience.

If your experience looksa little different from what we have outlined and you believe you can bring value to the role, we would still encourage you to apply.
