We're looking for a passionate and skilled 1st Mate to join the Drysdale, part of Sanford's Wildcatch scampi fleet. Operating from Timaru and Bluff, the vessel undertakes voyages of up to six weeks, fishing for scampi across the Chatham Rise, Auckland Islands, and Chatham Islands, with catch delivered to Sanford's Bluff and Timaru processing sites. This is a fantastic opportunity whether you're an experienced Mate looking for a change in vessel or stepping into the role for the first time.

This is an Independent Contractor (self-employed) position on a 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off rotation. The vessel is due in port approximately the 6th of January 2026 (subject to change).

Travel to and from Timaru or Invercargill within NZ is covered by Sanford.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operations on the vessel, ensuring the crew is working efficiently and safely.
  • Assist with navigation, weather monitoring, record keeping, and bridge watchkeeping.
  • Work with the crew to ensure efficient, high-standard scampi packing and processing at sea.
  • Monitor and uphold all safety procedures and vessel compliance requirements.
  • Foster a productive, respectful, and communicative crew environment onboard.

What we're looking for

  • Mate Fishing Vessel (MFV) certification or equivalent.
  • A current Maritime Medical or ability to obtain one.
  • Understanding of relevant NZ maritime legislation including MOSS, HSWA, Fisheries Act, and MPI food safety standards.
  • Proven leadership and operational experience in scampi fisheries or similar deepwater operations.
