Protection Engineer
- Apply and develop your electrical engineering and technical design capabilities within the Energy sector making a real-world difference to protecting the electrical assets of our clients, and helping generators connect to the National Grid
- Undertake protection studies and apply settings on new-build and brown-field substation projects across New Zealand
- Scope to build your career in a range of pathways including protection settings discipline, engineering capability, design, or project delivery with a passionate team focused on your professional development
Te whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
In this role, you will apply your protection engineering abilities within a team that investigate, scope, design, and deliver protection settings projects. At Beca we pride ourselves on our involvement in complex and multi-discipline projects. You will have opportunity to learn from our Power industry experts delivering these engineering solutions across New Zealand and Australia. While being based in Christchurch or Wellington, you will be part of a highly diverse and supportive team, with global experience from our technical and project delivery leaders, senior engineers and newly joined graduates.
Projects range from connecting renewable energy sites to upgrading networks for resilience. Projects will have unique design requirements, however, a large part of the work will be predominately within the Transpower standards framework. Experience with DigSilent PowerFactory, Transpower standards and Stationware is advantageous. Additional secondary or communications design experience would be valuable.
At Beca, you'll learn from top professionals and contribute your ideas. Access to a multidisciplinary business allows you to leverage technical expertise for complex electrical projects. You'll influence project delivery, with opportunities to develop consulting skills, project management, and technical expertise, including industry accreditation. There are opportunities to progress your career including down the path of design manager, client relationships or technical specialist.
Ko wai koe | About you
Our protection settings Engineers are united by their passion to make a real-world difference through their engineering, design and attention-to-detail skills. Joining this team will allow you to bring your engineering abilities to understand client project requirements, analyse and problem solve. You will have the curiosity mindset and skills to research and validate data, drawings, site photos, as well as the ability to interpret these with on-site visits, and have strong communication skills including report writing. While you will have plenty of scope for success in this role, you will also have the awareness to know your limits, especially knowing when to seek input to validate and confirm your design assumptions such as from Beca's protection settings sector technical experts, or through other sources.
To be successful in this role, you will have previous protection settings experience which could be from a consulting environment or within an asset owner in the transmission or distribution sectors. While we have plenty of scope to develop your skills, this role won't suit a person starting their career such as at a graduate level.
You will also be a relationship builder, able to work with other engineers collaboratively on projects, as well as with our clients. You will also be passionate about learning from others, ready to listen, engage, support, and positively query situations with a focus on great project outcomes. We also like to have fun along the way, so a good sense of humour will hold you in good stead. This position will provide you with wide exposure and create opportunities for career and professional development across the Beca business, both locally and across Australasia.
We welcome and invite applicants from diverse backgrounds.
