Health and Safety Business Partner

Coastguard Tautiaki Moana is on the lookout for a proactive and people-focused Health, Safety & Wellbeing Business Partner to join our crew.  

About the role: As a key member of our Health, Safety & Wellbeing Team, you'll partner with staff and volunteers across Aotearoa to deliver practical health, safety, and wellbeing initiatives.

You'll bring a balance of independence and teamwork, confident working autonomously, but just as comfortable connecting and collaborating with others to make a difference.

From driving continuous improvement and leading key projects, to ensuring compliance and building trusted relationships, this role is vital to help us achieve our mission of Saving Lives on the Water and keeping our people safe.

You'll do this all in meaningful ways by;

• Partnering with leaders to ensure awareness and accountability for H&S risks, requirements, and improvement opportunities
• Leading Audits, investigating incidents, ensuring AA and compliance processes are embedded, and promoting root-cause analysis and proactive learning.
• Driving the delivery of our health, safety and wellbeing strategy through practical projects, good engagement and measurable results
• Monitoring, auditing and supporting regulatory compliance across OH&S obligations, liaising with WorkSafe, Maritime NZ and SAR partners as required
• Delivering and supporting internal training and promoting safe behaviours, working practices, as well as learning across our H&S network.

What we're looking for

• Preferred but not essential - NEBOSH qualification or equivalent Health & Safety Qualification.
• 5–6 years' experience in a Health & Safety role – ideally across multi-site, high-risk industries, volunteer, or not-for-profit environments.
• Proven ability to lead risk assessments, audits, and investigations, and develop improvement plans and systems while taking the team along for the journey through effective coaching.
• The ability to manage multiple competing priorities and adapt quickly to change.
• Strong knowledge of NZ H&S legislation, including MOSS, and experience applying it in operational settings.
• Excellent communicator and coach – able to engage with everyone from volunteers and frontline staff to senior leaders
• Confident working independently while maintaining strong relationships and collaboration with a results-based approach focused on producing positive outcomes.
• Willingness and flexibility to travel regularly across the region (and nationally when needed).
