1. Position Purpose

The Retail Sales Assistant supports the daily operations of the retail store by performing checkout duties, stock handling, and delivering excellent customer service. The role ensures shelves are well stocked, the store is tidy, and customers have a positive shopping experience.

2. Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Sales

  • Greet customers and assist with product enquiries.
  • Demonstrate and explain goods and services to customers.
  • Prepare sales invoices and process payments accurately using multiple payment methods.
  • Provide a professional, helpful, and friendly shopping experience at all times.

Checkout Operations

  • Operate the checkout system efficiently and accurately.
  • Handle cash, EFTPOS, and card transactions securely.
  • Follow procedures for returns, exchanges, and refunds.

Stock Handling & Inventory

  • Participate in stock takes and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Safely unload and receive inward goods.
  • Verify received goods against accompanying documentation and report discrepancies.
  • Replenish shelves and maintain clean, organised product displays.
  • Break down bulk deliveries and organise products for storage or shelf use.
  • Keep storage areas tidy, organised, and compliant with health and safety procedures.

Store Presentation & General Duties

  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the grocery area and common spaces.
  • Ensure aisles are well-presented and free from hazards.
  • Assist with general shop duties and tasks as directed by the manager.

3. Skills and Competencies Required

  • Good verbal communication and basic literacy & numeracy skills.
  • Strong customer service focus with professional behaviour.
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
  • Time management and organisational skills.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to handle pressure during busy trading hours.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in transactions & stock control.

4. Physical Requirements

  • Physically fit and able to lift up to 20kg repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods while performing duties.

5. Availability

  • Able to work weekday, weekend, and shift-based rosters including evenings and public holidays as required.
