The role

We are seeking a dedicated Neonatologist to join our Level 3 NICU team at Dunedin Hospital. This is a permanent, full-time (1.0 FTE) position offering the opportunity to contribute to a high functioning, inclusive team delivering neonatal care across the Southern region. You will provide clinical leadership and expert care to infants and their whānau, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team. You will also contribute to service development, quality improvement, teaching, and research.

What you need to work here

To practise as a Neonatologist in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC). International applicants need a postgraduate qualification comparable to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine) or another recognised neonatal qualification.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Deliver high-quality neonatal care in a Level 3 NICU setting, including intensive care, special care, and care of the newborn
  • Neonatal services offered in Dunedin include care for extreme preterm infants, high frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, and whole-body cooling
  • Provide and supervise neonatal transport services by helicopter or fixed wing aircraft to the Otago and Southland region
  • Participate in the neonatal on-call roster (currently 1:5), with availability from home for urgent consultations and emergency retrievals
  • Provide antenatal and perinatal advice to obstetric and midwifery colleagues across the Otago and Southland region
  • Conduct neonatal outpatient clinics, including rural outreach as required
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including registrars, house officers, and medical students from the University of Otago
  • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and governance activities
  • Contribute to service planning, quality assurance, and clinical improvement initiatives
  • Engage in teaching, research, and professional development activities

The ideal applicant will:

  • hold vocational registration or be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • hold Fellowship of the RACP or equivalent neonatal qualification
  • have significant recent experience in a Level 3 NICU and neonatal transport
  • demonstrate cultural safety and a commitment to biculturalism
  • be skilled in neonatal intensive care procedures and emergency response
  • be adaptable, collaborative, and committed to continuous improvement.
