The role

Our team is growing and we're looking for an experienced Liability Underwriter to join our Commercial Markets Trading team. Reporting to the Commercial Referral Team Manager, you'll underwrite technically complex liability referrals — supporting internal underwriters and market-facing transactions with sound judgement and a coaching mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite liability referral business, for both renewals and new business, in line with portfolio strategy.
  • Achieving high levels of quote conversion whilst maintaining turnaround time within SLAs.
  • Collaborate with all areas of underwriting to find agreeable solutions aligned to portfolio strategy.
  • Provide coaching, technical support, and plain language guidance to internal underwriters 
  • Maintain compliance with licensing, treaty limits, and internal policies 
  • Drive process improvements across the team and contribute to project initiatives

Qualifications and experience

  • Specialised liability referral underwriting with strong understanding of the New Zealand market and emerging trends.
  • Exceptional communication skills and be able to explain technical decisions clearly 
  • A coaching mindset with a willingness to share knowledge 
  • High integrity, adaptability, and strong interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to make autonomous technical decisions—while still aligned to portfolio strategy 
  • Strong record-keeping, decision rationale, and audit compliance
