Job Purpose

This Position Description describes the role and responsibility required to provide a great shopping experience for customers visiting our Store located at Olympic Place, as well as our Online customers.  All duties are to be carried out within EcoMatters policies and procedures, health and safety requirements and laws.

Overall Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this Store & Sustainability Supervisor role is the following:

  • Providing outstanding customer service, building lasting relationships, and encouraging repeat visits through follow-up and product knowledge
  • Supporting in-store merchandising, creating engaging product displays, and contributing to promotional planning with the Marketing team and Store Team Leader
  • Handling online enquiries, order packing, and distribution, and ensuring a smooth experience for online customers
  • Selecting and ordering stock, maintaining supplier relationships, and assisting with regular stocktakes
  • Overseeing daily cash handling, electronic transactions, tracking store credits and gift cards, and assisting with New Lynn Bike Hub transactions
  • Coordinating recycling drop-offs & collections, and Refillery operations
  • Responding to phone and email enquiries
  • Overseeing library as required
  • Ensuring store security procedures are followed
  • Participating in monthly Admin meetings
  • General Housekeeping of the EcoHub which may include kitchen, bathroom restocking, wheely bin day
  • A genuine commitment to upholding the organisation's vision, mission and purpose.

Health and Safety

  • Adhere to EcoMatters health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring prudent safety processes are in place on all sites to ensure the shop is a safe and healthy place for staff and visitors.
  • Heavy lifting and periods of standing will be required
Status and hours
  • Permanent employment
  • Normal hours of work are up to 21 hours per week - Wednesday to Saturday, and any additional hours outside of opening time as agreed with the Reporting Manager
Reporting and Supervision
  • Reports to: Store Team Leader
  • Direct report: Store Assistant(s) and managing Store Assistant casuals or volunteers

  • Approval of Smartly timesheets and leave requests

  • Manage Leave cover
  • Annual performance reviews for permanent staff
Performance Measures

Performance will be assessed against individual goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) set in collaboration with the Reporting Manager. These will include:

  • Relationships & Collaboration

  • Positive feedback from customers, volunteers, suppliers, and colleagues

  • Effective communication and collaboration with the Store Team Leader and wider EcoMatters team
  • Team Support & Supervision

  • Supports workflow and guidance of Store Assistant(s)

  • Coordinates casual staff or volunteers during periods of leave
  • Cash & Stock Operations

  • Accurate reconciliation of cash and stock

  • Adherence to stock security and loss prevention practices
  • Store Operations

  • Effective stock selection and ordering

  • Well-maintained merchandising and promotional displays
  • Coordination of recycling drop-offs and refillery operations
  • Positive engagement with recycling partners and suppliers to ensure smooth collection and collaboration
  • Communication & Sales

  • Demonstrates strong sales ability and customer engagement

  • Maintains clear communication with team members and supports a positive team culture
  • Supports marketing initiatives in collaboration with the Marketing team and Store Team Leader
  • Initiative & Continuous Improvement

  • Actively seeks training and development opportunities

  • Identifies and implements ideas to improve sales and store operations
  • Health & Safety

  • Ensures visitor safety and follows store safety procedures

  • Maintains a zero-accident environment

  • Supports cost-effective and quality-focused store operations and contributes to the overall success of EcoMatters' mission.

  • Meets individual targets and KPIs as agreed with the Reporting Manager
  • Performance goals and KPIs will be reviewed annually and updated as needed.
Desirable skills & experience:
  • 2–3 years of retail sales experience
  • Experience with stock coordination and supplier relationships
  • Previous experience supervising at least one team member or volunteer
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Organised, proactive, and able to use initiative
  • Comfortable using digital tools (POS, email, spreadsheets, stock management software (eg.Lightspeed/Vend), and online platforms (eg.Shopify)
  • Commitment to sustainability and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Experience working in a community or not-for-profit organisation (preferred but not essential)
