Start your career in marine engineering with us
Begin your marine engineering career in one of New Zealand's most unique environments. Based at the Devonport Navy Base, you'll work alongside skilled professionals and gain exposure to an incredible range of vessels—Navy ships one day, superyachts or research craft the next. This is hands-on training in a dynamic setting where no two days look the same.

Expect variety and challenge. You might be installing complex systems, overhauling propulsion gearboxes, or assisting with drydock operations. From precision mechanical fitting to supporting major refits, you'll learn the skills that keep ships moving and systems performing at their best. This apprenticeship is your pathway to a permanent role as a qualified Marine Mechanical Fitter, backed by structured training and real-world experience.

You're curious, hands-on, and eager to learn. You thrive in practical environments, enjoy solving mechanical challenges, and take pride in precision work. You're committed to safety, adaptable under pressure, and ready to collaborate with experienced professionals. What We're Looking For

  • You're mechanically minded, hands-on and curious, always keen to learn new skills.
  • You pay attention to detail, making sure every job is done right.
  • You're safety-focused, looking out for yourself and your team.
  • You work well with others, asking questions and sharing ideas.

What You Might Already Have

  • NCEA Level 2 with Maths, English, and ideally Physics.
  • A pre-trade qualification like the NZ Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) from a polytechnic or training provider.
  • Basic workshop experience in machining, welding, or fitting from a pre-trade course.
