The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI), located within Te Puia in Rotorua, is the custodian of traditional Māori arts, crafts, and cultural knowledge. Established to preserve and protect these taonga, NZMACI operates under the NZ Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Vesting Act 2020, continuing its mission to safeguard and promote the legacy of Māori culture for future generations.
NZMACI focuses on fostering mastery in traditional skills, developing leaders in Māori arts, and enriching the cultural and educational experiences of its tauira and kaimahi. Mō te tūnga | About the role:
As an Āhua Gallery Host, you'll play a key role in creating an exceptional visitor experience within the Āhua Gallery – supporting the presentation and sale of Māori artworks and assisting with exhibitions.
You'll help ensure the gallery runs smoothly day-to-day by assisting with sales, maintaining displays, caring for taonga, and engaging manuhiri in a warm, professional, and culturally grounded way.
This role combines customer service excellence with pride in Māori arts and traditions. You'll contribute to meeting sales targets, maintaining high presentation standards, and ensuring every visitor leaves with a meaningful connection to our culture and people.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring:
- A strong understanding of Māori culture, including toi Māori, te reo Māori, and tikanga.
- A demonstrated commitment to cultural integrity and respectful representation of Māori arts and traditions.
- Previous customer-facing experience in retail, hospitality, gallery, or cultural tourism settings.
- Confidence using POS systems and basic computer applications.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a friendly, welcoming, and culturally sensitive approach.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in presentation.
- Reliability, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for arts, culture, and delivering meaningful visitor experiences.
