- Part time (Flexible part time role, expected to require between 12-25 hours per week depending on project stage. Additional availability may be needed during key design, consenting and construction phases.
- Fixed Term (until completion of the new marae rebuild).
Tāngoio Marae is moving through a once-in-a-generation kaupapa – the rebuild of our marae at Whakaari. To support this mahi, we are seeking a steady, experienced technical leader to serve as Kaitātaki Hanganga, helping guide the design, consenting, procurement and construction phases of the project.
This role sits at the heart of our governance arrangements. You will act as the Trustees' Representative and one of the marae members on the Project Control Group. You will work closely with the external Project Manager, architects, engineers, the Quantity Surveyor, Crown partners and our Kaitakawaenga (Cultural and Engagement Lead). Together, the cultural and technical leads form a unified partnership supporting the Trustees to make confident, well-informed decisions.
About the Role
The Kaitātaki Hanganga provides governance-level oversight of all technical and construction elements of the rebuild. You will ensure the kaupapa is delivered safely, in line with tikanga, and within the Crown-approved budget, scope and Project Delivery Plan.
Key responsibilities include:
- Representing the Marae Trust on the Project Control Group
- Providing technical advice to the Trustees
- Reviewing design stages and identifying risks early
- Guiding consenting pathways and understanding regulatory impacts
- Overseeing procurement and contractor performance through the Project Manager
- Monitoring programme, cost, quality and health and safety
- Verifying evidence for Crown funding milestones
- Escalating issues early and supporting strong governance decisions
- Working closely with the Kaitakawaenga to align cultural and technical pathways
This role is part-time, with hours expected to fluctuate across the project lifecycle (approximately 12–25 hours per week).
What You Will Bring
We are looking for someone who brings both technical expertise and calm governance judgement. You do not need to be an engineer, but you must be confident in technical conversations and comfortable asking the right questions.
You will bring:
- Experience overseeing major capital or infrastructure projects
- Strong understanding of construction, design and consenting processes
- Confidence working with architects, engineers, planners and contractors
- Experience advising governance groups or working within a governance environment
- Ability to interpret complex information and present it in clear, plain language
- Sound judgement, cultural awareness and a values-based approach
- An understanding of tikanga Māori as it applies to sequencing, design and construction
Above all, we're looking for someone steady, respectful and committed to kaupapa-led outcomes.
Why This Kaupapa Matters
This work is about more than construction. It is about protecting our whakapapa, honouring our stories, and building a safe and culturally grounded home for present and future generations. The Kaitātaki Hanganga plays a key role in ensuring our marae rebuild is technically sound, culturally aligned and delivered with integrity.
