Ko wai mātau | About us

The people at Whakatāne District Council love what we do because we do it for others, and that feels good. We work hard and we know it's important to stop and play too. We're on a learning journey because we know we can always do better, and we know we're better together. Will you come on that journey with us? In return, you'll get access to a range of staff benefits including flexible working arrangements, an extra week's annual leave and free or discounted access to our community facilities. You'll never be more than half an hour away from rivers, lakes, forests, beaches and great walks - most are just on your doorstep. We love this place, and you will too.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

This role sits at the intersection of law, property, and community development. You'll play a key part in providing legal and commercial advice across Council's strategic property assets including harbour leases, commercial buildings, and other property interests.

As a trusted advisor, you'll ensure our property documentation, contracts, and leases are well-drafted, compliant, and aligned with Council's goals. You'll also take a lead role in progressing key property projects and initiatives that enhance the economic, social, and environmental outcomes for our district.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys variety from advising on complex property matters and managing contracts, to delivering projects and building strong relationships across the business and wider community.

Ko wai koe | About you

You're a pragmatic and commercially minded professional who brings a solid understanding of property and contract law, and the ability to translate that knowledge into practical advice and outcomes. You're confident working across a range of property matters, from harbour and commercial leases to land transactions. Also, you take pride in ensuring that documentation and processes are robust, compliant, and fit for purpose.

  • A strong background in property law, conveyancing, or commercial leasing.

  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively.
  • An understanding of local government processes, or the ability to quickly get up to speed in a public sector environment.
