Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

Step into a pivotal position as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (or Registered Nurse) within the Public Health Service. You'll bring your nursing expertise to protect and promote the health of our communities, leading the response to communicable diseases through case management, outbreak control, and prevention. This role provides key leadership in the management of communicable diseases within the Compliance and Health Protection team.

This role is whānau-centred and equity-driven, working in partnership with Māori and Pacific communities to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi and champion Pae Ora. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, provide leadership in education, policy, and quality assurance, and mentor other health professionals. Your specialist knowledge will shape innovative, holistic care and strengthen health protection across Aotearoa.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Health Protection team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and works towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You're an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist (or registered nurse) ready to step into a specialist role in public health. With advanced clinical expertise and a strong commitment to equity, you'll bring both technical skill and cultural competence to the forefront of communicable disease prevention and response. You'll also have strong leadership skills across a multidisciplinary team, and a strong working knowledge of a health consumer's journey through the health system.

To thrive in this role, you'll have:

  • Current RN Practising Certificate (Nursing Council of NZ)
  • Post-graduate qualification (or working towards) in the specialty
  • Expert-level practice on the RN Professional Development and Recognition Programme
  • At least three years' experience in public health, communicable diseases, contact tracing, and vaccinations or equivalent relevant experience
  • Ability and willingness to provide BCG vaccination clinics (training will be provided)
  • Strong computer literacy and a full driver's licence

In short: you're a skilled, culturally grounded nurse who's ready to make a lasting impact in protecting and promoting the health of communities across Aotearoa.
