As we expand our microservices ecosystem and move more workloads into Azure, we are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Azure cloud experience to join our onsite team in Auckland.

Role Overview

In this role, you will design and maintain backend microservices, build reliable event-driven workflows, and contribute to / support the cloud adoption efforts across our Azure-based infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with developers, architects, and product teams to create scalable cloud-native services that align with EngineeringX's long-term platform vision.

This is an onsite-only position requiring hands-on system design, strong backend expertise, and meaningful experience across Azure services.

Key Responsibilities

Microservices Architecture (Primary Focus)

• Design, develop, and maintain distributed microservices through their full lifecycle, with clear boundaries and clean APIs.
• Implement event-driven workflows using Azure messaging services (e.g. Service Bus, Event Grid, or Event Hub) as appropriate.
• Build and manage webhook integrations, publish/subscribe models, and background workers.
• Ensure services are observable via structured logging, metrics, and tracing (with App Insights).

Azure Cloud Engineering

• Assist in deployment and configuration of services in Microsoft Azure.
• Work with DevOps engineers to improve CI/CD pipelines.
• Contribute to infrastructure improvements for reliability and repeatable deployments.

Backend Engineering

• Enhance and maintain our .NET backend, improving robustness, performance, and maintainability.
• Build robust RESTful APIs used by both internal microservices and frontend systems.
• Collaborate with frontend teams, including our Angular-based admin portal, on shared API contracts.

Required Skills & Experience

Azure Cloud

• Strong practical experience deploying and running production workloads on Azure.
• Familiarity with core Azure services used in our microservice architecture (e.g., Container Apps/App Service, Service Bus, SQL).
• Understanding of cloud networking, identity (Azure AD), secrets management, and distributed monitoring as they relate to building secure, observable services.
• Ability to troubleshoot production issues and improve performance and reliability at the service level (cost-aware engineering a plus).

Backend & Microservices Engineering

• Senior-level C#/.NET experience building production backend services.
• Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate architectural and design patterns in complex backend systems.
• Strong SQL and relational data modeling skills, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization for large datasets.
• Hands-on microservices experience, especially event-driven / async processing.
• Strong understanding of distributed system concerns (latency, retries, idempotency, eventual consistency).

Collaboration

• Ability to work onsite with cross-functional teams.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain architectural decisions and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Future-Focused Expectations

• Comfortable working in containerized environments (Docker) and modern CI/CD workflows.
• Proactively drives improvements to backend architecture, tooling, and cloud-native practices for the services you own.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Bicep).
• Prior work with modular monoliths or distributed domain architectures.
