We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a clinical pharmacist with extensive knowledge and experience in Women's Health as well as strong leadership capabilities to join our progressive Clinical Pharmacy Service at Counties Manukau
Middlemore Hospital is a large and progressive tertiary hospital located in South Auckland and is unique in terms of the diverse, high-needs population we serve. Our service is committed to providing excellent patient-centred care and achieving equitable health outcomes through collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation. We are proud to be one of the leading Clinical Pharmacy services in Australasia with established systems and technology to optimise safe and effective use of medicines for our patients, from admission to discharge. Our clinical pharmacists have a strong presence and are well-regarded across the organisation. Our work is highly valued not just in the direct patient care setting but also in clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team as well as systems improvement and governance. We are invested in building workforce capabilities and supporting our pharmacists to achieve their goals as a clinician and to make a lasting impact within and beyond the organisation. The diverse and complex clinical scenarios that we encounter and help manage every day make Counties Manukau an exceptional environment for lifelong learning. Furthermore, our recently updated career framework provides a clear and transparent pathway for our pharmacists to progress in their careers.
Women's Health services at Counties Manukau encompass acute antenatal, labour and birth care as well as high-risk antenatal/postnatal and gynaecology inpatient care. Women's health facilities at Middlemore Hospital include Birthing & Assessment Unit (B&A), Maternity wards (North & South), Ward 21, Gynaecology Care Unit (GCU) and the Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC). The healthcare teams consist of a diverse range of health professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives (hospital
- and community-based) and lactation consultants etc. The women we serve are unique and many have complex health and social needs. Inequities are evident in maternal and perinatal health outcomes, especially for Maaori and Pasifika. As the medicine expert with skills in patient education and problem-solving, the clinical pharmacist is well-equipped to provide safe and quality care to women with high needs and to optimise medication-related health outcomes.
For many years, clinical pharmacy services at Women's Health have been provided by a Rotational Clinical Pharmacist which limits growth from both an individual pharmacist and service point of view. We have created this new designated role in recognition of the great potential to learn and grow expertise since Women's Health covers pharmacotherapy in pregnancy, breastfeeding, sexual health and gynaecological issues alongside the co-morbidities that the women may have. Professionally, there is a need for strong pharmacy presence across Women's Health to ensure appropriate pharmacist representation and involvement in risk management, clinical governance and quality improvement around medicine use. Furthermore, relationship building with other Women's Health clinicians is key to the achievement of these purposes. This new role will be addition to the current Women's & Children's Team which consist of the Team Leader, Specialist Clinical Pharmacist in Paediatrics and a Rotational Clinical Pharmacist, and will include training in Paediatrics and Neonatal Medicine to increase our capacity for cross-training and cover.
We are looking for a motivated, highly skilled clinical pharmacist with the relevant experience and leadership qualities to step into this role as a Specialist. Alternatively, this is a rare opportunity for an experienced clinical pharmacist who is passionate about a career in Women's Health to develop from Pre-specialist to Specialist through our training pathway and established career framework. In addition, this role can cater for the pharmacist prescriber scope.
