Te Tumu Whakarae mō te Taiao| Secretary for the Environment and Chief Executive
Manatū Mō Te Taiao| Ministry for the Environment
The Ministry for the Environment is the Government's primary advisor on environmental matters, including managing the climate change response. As the Government's steward for the environment, the Ministry takes a long-term perspective on environmental issues. It is also committed to Incorporating mātauranga Māori into environmental policy and reflecting the Crown-Māori relationship under the Treaty in environmental policy and resource management arrangements.
The Secretary for the Environment and Chief Executive leads the Ministry for the Environment, and is responsible to the Minister for the Environment, Associate Ministers, and the Minister of Climate Change to provide:
- policy advice and implementation of that policy
- stewardship of the environment and administering funding related to investment in environmental programmes
- leadership of the Ministry for the Environment, and across the wider natural resources sector
- providing advice on governance and monitoring of the Crown's interests in the Environmental Protection Agency and the Climate Change Commission.
Two areas of immediate focus for the next Secretary are the delivery and implementation of the resource management system reforms through the Natural and Built Environments Bill, the Spatial Planning Bill and the Climate Adaptation Bill; and leading delivery of the Emissions Reduction Plan across the contributing sectors and the accountable agencies and the National Adaptation Plan.
The work of the Ministry has far-reaching impact across our economy and society. As such It must work closely with many stakeholders including iwi and hapu, other government agencies in the natural resources cluster such as the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for Primary Industries, and with local government which implements many environmental policies and programmes.
We are looking for an experienced leader who will deliver the current resource management reform programme and the government's climate change response, is adept in leading in complex and high-profile areas, can build and maintain constructive relationships across the wide and diverse set of stakeholders, and who can provide leadership to the Ministry and its functions.
This is an opportunity for a senior leader with strong credibility within the environmental sector and/or significant experience in organisational management, policy advice and implementation and sector leadership, to step into this significant chief executive role.
