Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Police Asset Recovery Unit's primary role is to deny criminals the opportunity to benefit from their offending or the ability to re-invest in criminal activity.
The Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 serves as the cornerstone of our legal framework. New case law is being obtained constantly, and you will be encouraged to use your initiative and explore ways of using the Act to recover criminal gains.
In this role you will utilise your experience and knowledge to identify and profile people and assets, to assess complex financial information and determine its relevance as evidence to investigations. Your role will involve working with investigative teams from within Police, as well as our external partner agencies.
Financial Analysts review and assess a variety of alleged criminal enterprises and the finances behind them; demonstrating links between targets and alleged criminally acquired assets. You will determine and quantify legitimate and illegitimate income on an evidenced basis; working as part of a team to advance successful court proceedings to restrain and forfeit the assets derived from crime.
**Key Accountabilities**:
Assist in the development of financial intelligence products and offender profiles.
Provide investigative support, transaction and asset analysis to Police Districts and partner agencies.
Conduct forensic financial investigations into assets derived from criminal activity.
Analyse complex financial transactions, banking records, and asset holdings.
Prepare formal statements and provide expert evidence in court proceedings.
Collaborate with internal and external agencies (e.g., Customs, SFO, IRD) in multi-agency operations.
Contribute to policy and legislative advice regarding proceeds of crime.
He aha taau e kawe mai | What you’ll bring
Whilst we are looking for skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the role, we also place high importance on your state of mind, the alignment of your values with ours, your ability to contribute to and build high performing teams, and the way that you lead yourself or others.
We are looking for an analyst who has broad investigative knowledge and experience.
A previous financial background, experience with financial investigations or an understanding of financial matters would be advantageous.
The applicant will also be able to critically analyse financial data alongside criminal investigations to isolate and extract relevant information and present their findings with confidence in written documentation, as well as the ability to confidently give their evidence in court.
Internal and external partnerships and working collaboratively are a key focus and the successful applicant can expect to be heavily involved in investigations associated with multiple departments within Police and across our external partners.
