He angitūtanga | About the role
Due to the increase in workload for our Stewart Island Operations team, the Department of Conservation have 1 permanent vacancy with the sole focus of working to achieve specific outcomes for SNZD set out by the Supervisor and Senior Leadership team.
As a Kaitiaki, Ranger you will be joining our dedicated team in Rakiura and carrying out trapping for feral cats and other biodiversity work in efforts to protect the Nationally Critical Southern NZ Dotterel. The last recording being just over 140 birds.
Our Rakiura Operations is tight knit and maintain positive working relationships across the unit. You will be working alone or in teams of 2 or 3 in remote locations for up to 10 days at a time.
**The position will be focussed on**:
- Trapping feral cats across the Tin Range and the Satellite Hills
- Working in remote locations alone or alongside other team members
- Monitoring and recording your work progress both with and without technology
- Traveling to and from field sites in small boats/helicopter or on foot.

This role is unique and will require you to have a key focus on health and safety and proven back-country experience. If you are a keen outdoorsperson and have a passion for conservation, we urge you to apply.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- Has proven ability to lead teams safely to complete given tasks
- High physical fitness
- Excellent communication skills
- A dedication to own and others health and safety
- Accurate and detailed record keeping
- Be comfortable working in remote areas for up to ten days at a time
- Experience and/or qualifications in working with toxic baits and animal traps
- Current First Aid certificate
- Familiarity with GPS navigation
- An ability to work unsupervised in remote locations
- Has proven ability to work in small teams in remote locations.
Desirable
- Boating experience
Mō te tīma | About the team
The Kaitiaki, Ranger position will form part of an energetic and hardworking team comprised of the Supervisor, 3 permanent Rangers, a team lead and other occasional staff, based in Rakiura. The Rakiura operational team are a close-knit team, so you'll get the opportunity to be exposed to different work streams during your time as a Ranger.

The salary range for this position is $47,320 to $59,978 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience
